The Center for International Programs (CIP) is designed to foster the cultural adjustment of international students and encourage their academic success. The CIP has two components; the English Language Academy (ELA) that offers non-credit English as a second language courses, and the international student advising component that includes immigration advising, cultural activities, homestays and arrangements for short-term host families.

All students are required to take the English and math placement tests during the first week of the semester. Students who need to refine their English language skills will be referred to the English Language Academy. A combined program of ELA courses and college credit courses is available with permission of the ELA director. International college students on F-1 visas are required to enroll in a full-time program of study of 12-17 credits hours per semester.

Information for International Students… 

Harcum College is located in Bryn Mawr, a beautiful, safe, family-oriented suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and only twelve miles from the center of the city. Students can earn an Associate's degree in Arts or Science. Graduates are prepared to continue on to the Bachelor's degree at a four year college or university or assume positions of responsibility in the workforce.

Application Requirements 

Please submit:

  • Completed Harcum College application
  • Official high school transcript with English translation
  • Official university/college transcript(s) with English translation
  • Letter of recommendation (2 for Nursing)
  • Essay
  • Official TOEFL score report.  Harcum's code is 2287 (minimum TOEFL score: 500 - paper based test, 61 - internet based test) Note: some programs may have specific TOEFL score requirements.
  • Application fee of $50 (waived for ELA students applying to Harcum)

Application for Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility)

Please submit:

  • Official letter of support from sponsorstating amount and duration ofsupport. Sponsors with U.S. citizenship/permanent residenceshould submit Form I-134, Affidavit of Support (download from www.uscis.gov).
  • Official letter from bank on bank letterhead stating amount of funds in sponsor's account (in English).

Transfer students:

  • Request Transfer Form from the Center for International Programs at Harcum (610) 526-6116.
  • Submit completed Transfer Form signed by International Student Advisor at current institution.

Financial documents must show a minimum of $29,935 in available funds for the Form I-20 (higher amount for Nursing programs). 

Placement Testing 

All students are required to take the Math and English placement tests. If English language skills require refinement, students will be directed to the English Language Academy (see below) on campus. This program will ensure the student’s success in achieving the necessary skills to begin a full academic program. Students in the advanced levels of the English Language Academy (ELA) may take college credit courses with permission of ELA director.

English Language Academy 

The English Language Academy is available to all students who wish to improve their English language skills. Classes are held in the four skill areas of Writing, Grammar, Reading, and Oral Communication. Classes are held throughout the year and students may study full or part-time, depending on visa status. The cultural component of the program includes on- campus activities and off-campus field trips to museums, historic sites and places of cultural interest.

Conditional Admission 

Students who meet the college's academic and financial requirements, but lack the required TOEFL score, may apply for Conditional Admission. The conditional admission will allow the student to enroll in the English Language Academy until the required TOEFL score or proficiency level is achieved. After satisfying the English language requirements, the student will enroll in a full-time course of study in the college. Scholarships

International students are eligible to apply for all Harcum College scholarships. The Edith Hatcher Harcum award provides scholarships based on a student’s grade point average from the most recent secondary or post-secondary institution.  The Admissions Office at 610-526-6050 will provide more information about the scholarship application procedure.
