HARCUM WINS REGION 19 TITLE
The 2nd - seeded Harcum College Lady Bears basketball team defeated 4th - seeded Delaware Tech March 2 to capture the 2013 NJCAA Region 19 basketball tournament championship at Brookdale Community College. Region 19 encompasses eastern Pennsylvania and the states of New Jersey and Delaware, and is considered one of the most competitive in the nation. Head Coach Sheila DiNardo was named the NJCAA Region 19 Coach of the Year. Harcum was 21-9 on the season, winning 19 of the final 21 games after starting 2-7. Harcum's 54-50 victory March 2 sent the Bears to last weekend's district tournament.
The NJCAA District N Tournament was played on Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10. Harcum hosted the tournament at Cabrini College's Dixon Center. After a tough, hard-fought game March 9 against Monroe College, the Lady Bears quest for the tournament championship ended with a score of 69-76 in favor of Monroe.
The Harcum women's basketball team was the college's first sports program to participate in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) beginning with the 2004-05.
Since that time, the Lady Bears have established themselves as NJCAA Division II national power.
Current Head Coach Sheila DiNardo has built upon the great tradition of the program and led it to new heights.
In her three seasons as head coach, DiNardo has led the Lady Bears to two NJCAA Region 19 championships, and the 2010-11 squad advanced to the national quarterfinals.
DiNardo has also seen three players sign with NCAA Division I programs, a first for the Lady Bears basketball program.
