Spring 2024
Greetings Harcum Bears,
I am a relatively new father (my daughter is 9½ months old as of 1/16/2024) and everyday is a new adventure. I have never experienced such a range of emotions and through it all, I’ve learned a lot. Here are a couple of my (many, many, many) realizations:
Mistakes: You will make mistakes. And that’s OK. Learn from your mistakes and try not to repeat them. When you make a mistake that affects others (your classmates, roommates, teammates, faculty, family, etc.), apologize and do better.
Balance: It’s hard to do it all. You’ll need to schedule your time effectively to attend all your classes (go to class!), complete your homework, spend time with friends and family, work, exercise, eat, and sleep.
Support: We all need it. Going through life alone is not easy. Rely on others, which includes your Harcum faculty and staff. Also, and this incredibly important, take advantage of all the resources offered at the College.
Time flies: It really does. Before you know it, you’ll be walking across the graduation stage ready for your career or further education. Cherish each day. Give thanks and appreciate every day, through all the highs and even through the lows.
Responsibility: Attending college is a privilege. In order to maximize your experience, you’ve got to be accountable. When you need help, advocate for yourself. Set high expectations for yourself and have faith in your ability to succeed. We believe in you!
In addition to the above realizations, here are a few tips to succeed. Successful Bears attend class and read their Harcum email every day. Successful Bears seek academic, counseling, and student health support when needed. And successful Bears don’t wait to start their job or 4-year college transfer search. They activate their College Central account and have their resume reviewed.
Familiarize yourself with College rules, regulations, and expectations. Should you have questions about policies, community standards, and/or student conduct procedures, read the Student Handbook. If you or someone you know is a victim of sexual misconduct or harassment, please refer to our Notice of Non-Discrimination policy. Additionally, the Student Government Association (SGA) is a dedicated team of your peers trained to serve as the voice of the entire Harcum student body. If you have ideas to improve the student experience, feel free to contact the SGA at sga@harcum.edu.
On behalf of everyone from Athletics, Campus Activities, Campus Safety, Career & Transfer Services, Counseling, Residence Life, and Student Health, we wish you a happy new year and here’s to a successful spring semester!
I hope that we’ll have the opportunity to connect. If you are on the Bryn Mawr campus, let’s grab lunch in the Klein Dining Hall. And if there is anything you’d like to discuss, you can always email me at ekovacs@harcum.edu. It is my honor and privilege to serve as your Dean of Student Life and I look forward to hearing from you soon! Go Bears!
Ed
P.S. Mark your calendar for our next "Bingo with the Dean" on Monday, March 11 at noon in the Klein Dining Hall! I love Bingo and hope you will join us for a fun time with great prizes!
